3 Things To Do After An Auto Accident

I hope you have never been in an auto accident, but chances are according to statistics from the National Safety Council there are 13.8 people involved per 100,000 vehicles. The chance of death by car accident was 1.5 per 100,00 vehicles in 2022. That's good news. Deaths are low, but injuries from run of the mill auto accidents are still prevalent. This blog will give you some advice on what to do after you are in a auto accident.

1) Get immediate help- when you are in an accident the first thing you want to do is make sure you, your passengers and the other involved vehicles have no life threatening injuries. Make sure you are in an area where you are safe and away from traffic. If you are in immediate distress, call 911. It's better to be safe than sorry. The medics will triage your condition and if there is serious injuries you will be taken to the hospital. Sometimes out of caution, the medics will take you to the hospital to be sure. Once at the hospital, the ER doctors will most likely do imaging such as x-rays, MRI and CT scans. They want to check for broken bones, internal bleeding and dislocations. Fortunately many times people do not have any of these disorders. That leaves you with muscle, bone, joint and tendon (ligamentous) injuries.

2) Go to a Chiropractor- but, go to a chiropractor that is a trauma trained chiropractor. The reason-we know how to correlate causality to bodily damage, and bodily damage to functional loss. Any chiropractor can treat you, but unless you go to a doctor that can work up a auto accident case, give an accurate diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan to assure that your healthcare bills are paid and if there is a chance that you have a case that goes to court, your notes, records and bills are ironclad are are less resistant to scrutiny. That brings me to the third action to take after an accident.

3) Get an attorney. Attorney's are your advocate, your voice. They know how to argue a case. Attorney's need chiropractors, and chiropractors need attorney's. We can't do each other's job. Chiropractors need attorney's to take the information and argue to an insurance company that the bills must be paid, and attorney's need a chiropractor to present the subjective and objective data in a format that is useful in a court of law. Fortunately, many times auto accidents do not go to court, they get settled once all information is dissected and each side comes to a mutual agreement.
