Headaches! One of the most common reasons why people visit a doctor, and yet so many reasons why headaches don't get better. Headaches can be caused by a variety of reasons but since this is a car accident website, we'll address headaches as they apply to our topic. Headaches can be caused by chemical reasons (hormones, diet, etc.), or mechanical (misaligned vertebrae, tight muscles, concussions).
When someone is involved in a motor vehicle accident, the neck is very susceptible to injury for a few reasons. 1) the neck is one of the most mobile areas of the spine. You can bend your neck down, up, side to side and rotate. 2) since you utilize seatbelts, you are strapped into your position. Seatbelts save lives but they are considered a product liability-they restrain your body so well, that when an accident occurs, your neck and shoulders move while the other part of your body stays in place. This causes body parts, muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones to move upon impact in your car. When this happens, you will experience muscle sprains, muscle sprains, vertebral subluxations, pinching of nerves, bulging of spinal discs and yes, occasionally a bone fracture.
If your body is restrained on impact, but your head continues moving, you will get whiplash. Whiplash is when the neck forcibly moves from front to back or side to side, depending on what angle you were struck in your automobile. Sometimes headaches can be immediate, or delayed. Immediate headaches can be an emergency. If you experience immediate headache after an accident, let the local ER check you out. Once you're cleared with no life threatening emergencies, then we'll work on your to get you better. Delayed headaches can take days or months to occur after an accident. It is important to have a trauma trained chiropractor evaluate your condition to determine what kind of headache you have. You can see my credentials here:
Some people already have headaches before the car accident, but the accident can make them worse or different. If you have be diagnosed by a doctor as having a certain kind of headache in the past, it is important to see a trauma trained chiropractor to differentiate the type of headache you have currently. Headaches caused by an accident can have symptoms such as dull ache, sharp, stabbing pain, radiating pain, pain in the eye, jaw pain, blurred vision, tearing, light sensitivity and scalp tenderness. There are many different types of treatments available. At our office we know that if a condition is physical in nature-not caused by chemicals, then there will only be a physical solution. Misaligned vertebrae from an accident when corrected properly, can make a world of difference. Chiropractic manipulation along with anti-inflammatory measures, exercises and dietary changes all can help relieve a serious condition.
