When you are involved with physicians, hospitals and attorneys after an accident, you will be asked to sign a lein. A lein is a legal document that allows these different entities to work with you without getting paid until that case has been settled. For example, when visiting your doctor for the first time you will have a lein as part of your basic intake paperwork. This will allow the doctor to work on you without asking for payment until the case is over. Insurance companies will release the settlement check to the injured party or attorney to be disbursed when the case is finished. It is the responsibility of the assignee of the check to satisfy their lein holders.
