Why You Hurt After a Car Accident

Car accidents can be life threatening, or a mild inconvenience. Fortunately for most accidents, people do not die, they do however, get injuries to their spine, muscles, bones and nerves. Let's take a look at what happens to your body in an accident. A typical example could be a car at a stop light that is rear ended by a distracted driver. The bullet car strikes the car at rest and does damage to the car. Cars are made to crumble under stress, dispersing the energy from the other car to decrease the severity of the accident. Low speed collisions are capable of causing bodily damage because low speed accidents do not cause cars to crumble after getting struck, they transmit the force through the occupants in the car. Assuming that most people are using a seatbelt, the seatbelt can cause bodily harm. I'm not saying don't use your seatbelt, they save lives, but they are a product liability. That means that they provide an important function (saving lives) but at the same time, they cause damage to the muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones. Many people after an accident are shook up, adrenaline is pumping and your angry. Oftentimes, people do not experience symptoms after an accident for days, weeks or even months. They usually experience sore, achy or tight muscles. Sharp, radiating sensations can involve nerves. Headaches are common. Shoulder, knee and ankle problems occur because these body parts can strike the interior of the care causing bruising and pain.

The first objective if you feel like you are not well is go to the hospital. They will do an exam searching for internal bleeding, fractures and dislocations. If you are free of these conditions you most likely have an injury to muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and bones. When you are struck in a car accident, these structures will be stretched to their limit. This will can tearing and shearing of tissues that result in inflammation and scarring. Pain can be generated from these structures. So what to do?

Old advice like applying heat and resting are detrimental to your recovery. Heat should never ne used in an acute injury (acute is 0-6 weeks after an accident). Rest causes the body to heal incorrectly. What you should do is visit a trauma trained chiropractor. The reason? We correlate causality to bodily injury, and bodily injury to functional loss. In other words, we prove that you have an injury as a result of your accident. Proving that your injuries were sustained in an accident helps you get the treatment you need and the settlement you deserve. This is not a simple task, you need to find a chiropractor that is trained in trauma care and can work with attorneys including depositions and litigation.
